William was a farmer and a local civic leader--serving for years as the Justice of the Peace in Lamar Township, Pennsylvania. He was known as "Squire Allison." He was a Republican and a Presbyterian.

He appears on the 1870 Census of Porter Twp., Clinton Co., Pennsylvania as a farmer with real estate worth $11,000 and personal possessions worth $2,000.

His death was sudden: one Sunday morning he went to the barn, hitched up his horse to the buggy preparatory to going to church. He came into the house, sat down on a chair for two minutes, and died of a heart attack.
