For a number of years he was a bookkeeper for the Red Run Coal Company in Roaring Branch, Pennsylvania. This company was owned and operated by Charles Green, who was quite well-to-do and who established the "Charles Green Rest Home" for senior citizens.

Upon the death of Charles Green, John took over the management of the home until his death. His widow then took over these responsiblities for a few years until she moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
