#1846 Johann Wilhelm "William" Bernhardt ( Casper Bernhardt )

Other names for William: John William Barnhart.

William was born 3 Mar 1746 in Germany. He died 6 Jan 1823 in Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

He anglicized his name to John William Barnhart.

We know a bit about his family from his own hand. William's bible was passed down through Philip's line but eventually was discarded. Philip's son, Frederick, located the bible in a second hand store and purchased it about 1875. By 1911, Frederick's son, William, had the bible...a prized possession. Paul S. Barnhart, researching the family, learned of the bible and was able to make a copy of William's original entries.

Lord help me.

That through my life

I may offer love and praise to Thee from my heart

And may call upon Thee when in trouble,

As long as I shall have the power of speech.

The bible of his granddaughter, Elizabeth (Barnhart) Daubenspeck, that gives his marriage date also has a date without explanation: 3 Jul 1775. Since that is well before she was born, it's unlikely to be a presentation date. Some have speculated that it is the date the family relocated from Northampton Co., Pennsylvania to Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co.

William married #1860 Anna Schmidt. She is the daughter of Rudolf & Barbara (Weiss) Schmidt. She is an ancestor in the Schmidt Line.

Marriage notes

They married 12 May 1772 in Zion Reformed Church, Northhampton, Pennsylvania.

They were married by the Rev. Abraham Blumer. This church is where the Liberty Bell was hidden in 1777 by burying it under the floor.

Anna was born 3 Jul 1755 in Salisbury Twp., Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania (probably).

Her name is sometimes anglicized as Smith.

At the time of her birth, Salisbury Twp. lay in Northampton Co., Pennsylvania.
