#1867 Daniel Barnhart ( Johann Wilhelm "William" BernhardtCasper Bernhardt )

Daniel was born 16 Sep 1783 in Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was baptised 28 Sep 1783 in Reformed Church at Harrold's Settlement. He died 6 Nov 1852 in Chicora, Butler Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in White Oak Cemetery, Kepples Corners, Butler Co., Pennsylvania.

He was baptized by the Rev. Johan Wilhelm Weber, who was pastor of the church.

[Brown], published in 1895, claims that Daniel came to Butler Co., Pennsylvania in 1797. However, he is not listed on the 1803 tax roles. His daughter, Elizabeth's, bible has been passed down until it came into the possession of Sarah Elizabeth (Cannon) Swanson, one of Elizabeth's great-granddaughters. From it we learn that the family left Greensburg in the summer of 1814 and moved to Butler Co. They lived for that winter and the next summer with Daniel's brother, Rudolf and his family. That cabin was 16' x 24' and would have been quite close quarters. Once Daniel had his cabin built in the fall of 1815, the family moved in. Daniel spent the rest of his life there, leaving it to his son, David.

Daniel bought the first lot sold in Millerstown Borough, which his brother, Philip, had laid out, and was rewarded with having the full price remitted to him as the opening purchaser. On the lot he built an "unpretensius" cabin. This cabin became known as David Barnhart's Pioneer Store, stocked and run by John F. Wiles.

We find him in Donegal Twp., Butler Co. on the 1820 Federal Census. The two boys under 10 would be William and David and the three girls some combination of Elizabeth, Catharine, Mary and the newborn Susannah.

On the 1830 Federal Census all four of his boys and two of his daughters, Susannah and Christina, are still at home.

On the 1840 Federal Census we see John and Daniel at home. The male age 20-29 could be either William or David. I suspect William because the only other William in the area is slightly too old but we do see a David in the right age bracket living nearby. The young woman is probably Christina who will marry shortly. The older woman is probably Catherine although, if so, her age is mis-reported by about a decade.

On the 1850 Federal Census they are listed in Fairview, Butler Co., Pennsylvania. Two of their grandchildren, Elias and Sarah Byers, are living with them. Millerstown sat on the border of Donegal Twp. and Fairview Twp.

Daniel and Catherine are buried in the White Oak Cemetery in Butler Co. which is also known as the Old Barnhart Cemetery. The grave site is almost on the bank of Rt. 268, just across the road from the original location of the Union Church. The graves of his brother, Philip, and his wife are next to theirs, and several other close relatives are buried nearby. It states that Daniel and Catherine were buried in the Old Sugar Creek Church Graveyard, Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania. This confusion may have arisen because two churches used the original site at the time of their deaths: the Lutheran and the Reformed Congregations. Only later, when the old church fell in, did the Reformed Congregation move across the county line to Armstrong Co., where it exists today.

Daniels grave marker gives his birth and death dates and then incorrectly calculates his age at death as 69 years, 1 month, 19 days...off by two days.

Daniel married #1878 Anna Catherina "Catherine" Holtzer. She is the daughter of Jacob & Christina Barbara (Lukens) Holtzer. She is an ancestor in the Holtzer Line.

Marriage notes

They married Abt 1808.

Catherine was born 30 Apr 1791 in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 20 Nov 1879 in Butler Co., Pennsylvania. She was buried in White Oak Cemetery, Kepples Corners, Butler Co., Pennsylvania.

The [Garner] source ([Knepper-67] seems derived from it) gives her birth date as 15 Apr 1788.

The family surname is variously spelled Holtzer, Hoelzer and even Halver.

The bible of her daughter, Elizabeth, says that Catherine was a resident of the same neighborhood as Daniel. I'm told that some genealogists use an eight mile radius as a limit for courting, so Catherine would have been a close neighbor, indeed.

She appears on the 1820 Federal Census, 1830 Federal Census, 1840 Federal Census and 1850 Federal Census with Daniel and various members of the family.

On the 1870 Federal Census her granddaughter, Sarah Catherine (Byers) Barnhart, is living with her.

On the 1870 Federal Census she is living with her son, David, and his family in Fairview, Butler Co., Pennsylvania.
