John was born 21 Sep 1775 in Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.
We presume that John is one of the younger males in William's household in 1790. I've found no record of John in 1800 so far, nor does he appear in what I presume to be his father's household.
On the 1810 Federal Census, John is farming in North Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.
By 1820, this farm is taken over by his brother, Thomas. I have not found John listed as a head of household on the 1820 through 1840 Censuses.
On the 1850 Federal Census he is living with his daughter in North Huntingdon. He is a wagon maker. This census lists his age as 70, which would put his birth year closer to 1780 than 1775.

Our family tradition and [Hedley], which I believe to be based upon family tradition, call her Nancy. However, I haven't located a woman of that name in this area at this time. However, there is a Jean McGrew married to a John Copeland who appears in the will of William McGrew, and her mother was Ann. One possible explanation is that the family story remembers the mother, given that Nancy is sometimes used as a nickname for Ann.
