#163 Mary Jane Dando ( Jonah Jehosophat DandoJohn DandoJohn DandoJohn DandoGeorge Dando )

Other names for Mary: Mary Jane Stouffer.

Mary was born 4 Dec 1854 in Llanfrechfa, Monmouthshire, Wales. She died 7 Dec 1924 in Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania from apoplexy. She was buried 9 Dec 1924 in Bradenville, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, Mary Jane's birth registration is the difficult one to find. There is a Mary Jane Dando registered in the beginning of 1855 but it is in Pontypool, which is about seven miles away from Llanfrechfa. Alternatively, there is Isset Mary Dando who is registered in Abergavenny as Mary Jane's older sisters are, but the date of registration is Jul-Sep 1853, which is before her birth date.

Some papers have her middle name as Ellen.

She appears with her parents on the 1861 Wales Census of Llandaff, Glamorgan, Wales and the 1870 Federal Census of Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1880 Federal Census she is in Ligonier, Pennsylvania with William and the three oldest children. On the 1900 Federal Census, the 1910 Federal Census, and 1920 Federal Census of Derry, Pennsylvania she is living with William and a gradually diminishing number of children.

Mary married #162 William Henry Stouffer. He is the son of Jacob & Susanna (Campbell) Stouffer. He is an ancestor in the Stouffer Line.

Marriage notes

They married Abt 1872.

William was born 18 Jun 1854 in Bradenville, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 24 Mar 1932 in Latrobe, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania from pneumonia. He was buried 26 Mar 1932 in Bradenville, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

The location of William on his first census, that of 1860, has various interpretations. Most genealogies have him as a child of Jacob Stouffer but there's little agreement on which Jacob Stouffer: there are a plethora in Pennsylvania in 1860. Some genealogies identify him as the child of Jacob M. & Eliza Stouffer of Guildford, Pennsylvania. My main concern in this case is that the 1860 census listing of this Jacob does not list a child named William.

Other genealogies identify William with W. H. Stouffer, the son of Jacob & Emaline (Gehr) Stouffer. The initials are correct and age is within the range listed above. However, this individual appears in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. This is halfway across Pennsylvania from Westmoreland Co. where William will be in 1870.

Finally, one genealogy has identified his parents as Jacob & Rachel Stouffer of Unity Twp. in Westmoreland Co. This attribution may simply be a mistake in selecting the desired Jacob Stouffer in Unity Twp. given the following.

In the absence of any other documentation or family information, I think the most likely possibility is that our William is listed in Unity Twp. as William H. Stouffer, son of Jacob & Susanna Stouffer. The name matches, the birth year is fairly consistent, and the location puts him firmly in Westmoreland Co.

By the 1870 Federal Census he is in Unity Twp., Westmoreland Co. and is working as a laborer on the farm of John & Mary Fergerson.

On the 1880 Federal Census he is in Ligonier, Pennsylvania working as a wagoner. On the 1900 Federal Census, the 1910 Federal Census, and 1920 Federal Census of Derry, Pennsylvania he is a coal miner. There were 15 to 20 different mines operating in New Derry and Bradenville. The records were pretty well lost when the mines were closed, so we have no record of which mine or company employed him.

We find him on the 1930 Federal Census in Derry widowed, retired and living with his son, Harry. His last name is given as Stauffer, as it is on his death certificate. The informant was Harry, whose name is written the same way. I'm uncertain if Harry changed the spelling, or if the family spelled it various ways at various times, or if the registrar who filled out the form just misheard.
