Alexander is listed as being "of Clanyard" in the Old Parish Records. I would assume this implies he lived in vicinity of Castle Clanyard. This was the Kirkmaiden stronghold of the Gordons of Clanyard, the most powerful family in the area. It was a tower house, probably dating from the late 16th century. It was in ruins by 1684 and all that remains today of the castle is part of a wall.
