Jacob was born 14 Jun 1839 in Hancock Co., Ohio. He died 10 Apr 1930 in Putnam Co., Ohio. He was buried in Harman Cemetery, Gilboa, Putnam Co., Ohio.

In Mar 1856, the family moved to Westerville, Franklin Co., Ohio where Jacob attended Otterbein University until Mar 1857, when they moved back to Hancock Co. From 1858 to 1862, he worked as a carpenter and, in the spring of 1862, he went into farming. Jacob was in Civil War, first in Co. A, 50th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and transferred to Co. A, 99th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, from 12 Aug 1862 to 17 Jul 1865. He was captured at Stone River but escaped. He was in many battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta and then to Nashville. He never received a scratch from the enemy but was considerable broken down by hard marching and exposure. He returned from the War to run his mother's farm in Blanchard Twp., Hancock County, Ohio. In 1880, 1910 and 1920, he lived in Gilboa, Putnam County, Ohio. He was president of a stone company and president of the Gilboa Bank.

Jacob married #2813 Mary Elizabeth "Ellen" Foltz.
