#37 Mary Elizabeth "Eliza" Knepper ( Benjamin C. KnepperWilliam C. KnepperGodfrey KnepperJohann Gottfried "Gottfried" KnepperClemens KnepperHans Peter KnepperTilmann Knepper )

Other names for Eliza: Eliza H. Knepper, Mary Elizabeth Vaughn.

Eliza was born 14 Sep 1858 in Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 15 Jul 1937 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pennsylvania from intestinal obstruction. She was buried 19 Jul 1937 in Calvary Cemetery, Altoona, Blair Co., Pennsylvania.

She shows on the early census records as Eliza H. Knepper. Her death certificate gives the name as found here.

The 1910 Census says that four of her twelve children were deceased that point.

By the time of the 1930 Census, she is shown as 10 years younger than her husband, instead of eight.

Eliza married #38 Thomas Willard Vaughn.

Marriage notes

They married 23 Oct 1881.

Note that there is some inconsistency about the marriage date. An obituary for Thomas puts the marriage date as 23 Oct 1881. However, on the 1910 Census, both of them report that they have been married 24 years, putting the marriage date around 1886. Further, Eliza states on the 1930 Census that her first marriage was when she was 19 years old, about 1877. The latter could, possibly, be a previous marriage since she is no longer living with her parents in 1880, although there is no other indication of this so far.

Other names for Thomas: Willard T. Vaughn.

Thomas was born 3 Jun 1850 in Newry, Blair Co., Pennsylvania. He died 16 Oct 1936 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pennsylvania from arteriosclerosis. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Altoona, Blair Co., Pennsylvania.

He is the son of William & Catherine (Storm) Vaughn.

Some sources have listed his wife as Carrie Elizabeth (Eller) Knepper. However, this is not consistent with death certificates. Carrie was the second wife of his father-in-law, Benjamin Knepper.

He shows on the 1880 Census of Altoona, Pennsylvania as a machinist, living with his parents.

In 1890, he appears at various places on the Veterans Schedules as a private in the 76th Pennsylvania.
