#5318 William Knepper ( John William "William" KnepperJohann Gottfried "Gottfried" KnepperClemens KnepperHans Peter KnepperTilmann Knepper )

William was born 25 May 1805 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He was baptised 30 Jun 1805 in Berlin Evangelical Church, Brothersvalley Twp., Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. He died 1885.

William owned canal boats on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and was later a merchant and tinsmith.

He appears on the 1850 Census in Washington Co., Maryland as a tinner. His real estate is valued at $1000.

In 1860 he is in Clear Spring, Maryland.

William married #5500 Henrietta R. Hower.

Henrietta was born Abt 1808 in Washington Co., Maryland. She died Abt 1893.

This marriage is as shown in [Wig]. The unpublished notes of [Terrill] identifies her marriage to a William Knepper as being with William (#51676), child of Solomon & Elizabeth (Foreman) Knepper. However, [Terrill] shows a large number of duplicated names for their children: three Elizabeths, two Anns, three Susans, two Margarets, etc. My suspicion is that two families, with somewhat overlapping names, were merged.

It's difficult to guess where to place her. On one hand, [Wig] describes William (#5318) as a tinsmith and says he ran canal boats on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which would tend to place him in Maryland. This is consistent with Henrietta's census records. On the other hand, [Wig] lists William (#5318) as dying in 1893, which seems inconsistent with Henrietta moving in with her brother-in-law by 1880, whereas [Terrill] lists William (#51676) as dying in 1874.

For now, I've kept Henrietta listed both places as #5500 and #51682 rather than merge them so that I can keep track of the separate children listed by [Terrill]. I've placed the children found in [Wig] under #5500. This includes from Bella down to Susan Alice. The remainder found in [Terrill] are listed under #51682. I've also placed all census information under #5500.

[Terrill] identifies her as the daughter of Anthony & Mary Hower. Her middle name may have been Rosan instead of starting with an S.

On the 1860 Census, she is listed as Elizabeth. Two additional children are listed in 1860: Amelia and Henrietta, ages 15 and 13 respectively, born in Maryland. Neither of these girls show up with the family in any other census, although we would have expected them in 1850 if they were daughters. I can only guess that they are close relatives fostering in although I have no known candidates at this point.

On the 1870 Census, her name is Henrietta again. She is living with her brother-in-law, Charles, in Clear Spring, Maryland along with three of her children: Margaret, William and Susan.

On the 1880 Census, she is living in Clear Spring, Maryland with her daughter, Margaret, and granddaughter, Mirtie. Her brother-in-law, Charles, is living next door with his family.
