David was previously married to Eliza Ringer, who died 26 Dec 1875, and by whom he had five children. In 1862, David was drafted into the Union Army. He mustered in as a Private, Co. K, 176th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was at Arkansas Post, Haines Bluff with General Grant and was present at the capture of Jackson, Mississippi and the siege of Vicksburg. He mustered out Aug 1863 at Black River, Mississippi. He suffered from chills and fever. In 1900, David was a farmer on the home farm in Nimishillen Twp., Stark Co., Ohio.
