[F] #10705 Alice Adella Macklin ( Joshua Jonah MechlingDavid MechlingWilliam MechlingJohn Jacob MechlingDiebold "Theobald" MechlingDiebold MechlingMartin Mechling )

Alice was born 5 Jan 1876 in Louden, Shelby Co., Illinois. She died 3 Feb 1940 in Fayette Co., Illinois. She was buried 6 Feb 1940 in Springhill Cemetery, Wrights Corner, Fayette Co., Illinois.

She appears on the 1880 census of Prarie Twp., Shelby Co., Illinois. On this census, she is listed as White. However, her great-grandson, David, wrote to Caral Mechling:

According to stories by now deceased children of Lawson Bartimus's younger half siblings, Alice Mechling was allegedly an orphan Indian girl adopted by Rebecca and Josh Mechling. She was allegedly traded for a plow and a team of mules in marriage as a teenager to my much older great grandfather Lawson Bartimus. Some of Lawson's half siblings did not approve of Alice, and even tried to keep her from getting some of his property when he died.

There have been rumors about her being Indian in the family, and some of her children and grandchildren had dark skin, but not so much with my branch. Nobody who knew for sure would say anything given the stigmas that existed at the time but do not now.

I have been doing genetic genealogy tests at 23andme and FTDNA, and no currently known Indian genetic markers were found, but the science in autosomal ethnic admixture tests is new and imprecise, especially for Native American Indians, who are reluctant to give samples. I have also tested the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of Alice's granddaughter, and it came back as T2b. mtDNA is passed on only by women to their children, so looking backwards gives you a glimpse of your mother's mother's mother's line etc. into the deep past. T2b is not associated with Indians, so it rules out Alice's biological direct maternal line as being fully Native American Indian. It does not rule out her father's entire lineage, nor for example her maternal grandfather, and others.

Alice married #62443 Lawson Bartimus.
