Wayne Robinson Varnum, aged 36, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Varnum of 243 East Brady Street, and head of the Wayne Varnum Associates, New York public relations bureau, died at 12:40 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the National Naval Medical Center, Washington, D.C., after a lingering illness.

Mr. Varnum had formed the New York firm in April 1947, along with Beryl Reubens, his former assistant in Columbia Records, Inc., where he was publicity director; and Marvin Drager, Columbia photo editor.

Before joining Columbia in 1939, Varnum was associated with the Des Moines Register and Tribune and the Chicago Daily News. He wrote a daily newspaper column entitled "To Be Continued" by Eli Robinson, for a group of California papers.

He handled the publicity for the Pittsburgh Symphony orchestra under Fritz Reiner when it made its 20th anniversary tour in 1947, and appeared in Life Magazine as one of the persons responsible for the success of singer Beryl Davis, whose publicity was handled by the Varnum associates.

Born in Butler, January 10, 1913, he attended public school here and was a graduate of Butler High School class of June 1930 and of the Pennsylvania State college class of 1934.

A veteran of World War II, Varnum enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was discharged as a lieutenant in 1945.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Cox Varnum of Chicago; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Varnum of Butler; a brother George Varnum, Jr., of Pittsburgh and a sister, Virginia Varnum of Vernon, Vt.

Mr. Varnum was a member of the Methodist church, Butler.

Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home, East North at McKean streets, from 2 until 5 o'clock and from 7 until 9 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and night.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon from the funeral home with the Rev. R. W. Faus, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery.

Wayne married #15411 Gladys Lillian Cox.
