He served in the Civil War, enlisting from Lancaster, Ohio on 11 Dec 1861, and was discharged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 16 Sep 1865. He was injured while lifting heavy guns on the gunboat, Pittsburgh. His pension papers show that from 1865-1868, he lived in Paulding Co., Ohio. From 1868-1869, he lived in Goodhope Twp., Hocking Co., Pennsylvania. From 1869-1873, he lived in Columbus, Ohio. From 1873-1883, he lived in Rockbridge or Millville in Hocking Co., Pennsylvania. From 1883 until his death, he was back in Columbus.
He had no children.
John married #13850 Minerva Ellen McConnell.
