[Mercy II-99] has the following:

"Gladys was raised a Methodist, but converted to Catholicism before her marriage. They moved to Sharonville, Ohio, where Ernest worked on the New York Central R.R. as a fireman, later became an engineer. In 1928, he took sick, and was never able to work fully again, so Gladys became the bread-winner for the family. She was a skilled seamstress, so took in sewing, also worked as a short-order cook at the local Y.M.C.A. It was the height of the depression, and urged by her parents, she sold their home in Sharonville, and the family moved to Columbus. The only work Gladys could secure was in the Hercules Pants Factory, sewing heavy work pants. But at night she attended Capitol Univ. and later Ohio State Univ. taking courses in typing, accounting, stenography and general business subjects. So proficient did she become, that she readily received jobs with various businesses. in 1943, she was office manager for the Collegiate Cap & Gown Co. From there, she went to the Frances Willard Candy Co. also as office manager, then the Variety Club in the same capacity. Her last position was with the Kohr-Royer Management Company, a position she held until her death at age 84. For the last 42 years of her life, she lived in a home Ernest had purchased around 1916. Althought the neighborhood had deteriorated, Gladys continued to live there alone after Ernest's death. She died of a heart attack at Grant Hospital in Columbus. A truly remarkable woman."
