According to the 1890 Veterans Schedule of the U.S. Census, he was a corporal with Co. K, 126th Ohio Infantry from 18 Aug 1862 until his death on 27 Jul 1864.

[Mercy I-98] notes that one source lists the cause of death as poisoning, but it is not given on the official pension records. That source also places his birth in Fairfield Co., Ohio.

Emanuel married #24892 Sarah Jane Swartz.

She is the daughter of John & Susan (Jordan) Swartz.

She appears on the 1870 Census of Thorn (listed as Thornville on the actual census), Ohio with her three children. Her real estate is valued at $400.

She appears on the 1880 Census in Little Sandusky, Ohio with Susan and David. Her mother is living with them. Ann Bower DiNicola notes that one of Sarah's brothers, David, lived in Wyandot Co., which might be why she relocated to there. In 1880 she remarried to a widower, John F. Schug.

The main 1890 Census is mostly lost, but she appears as Sarah J. Schug on the Veterans Schedule for Pitt, Ohio, listed as the widow of Emanuel Bower.

Her death date is sometimes listed as 4 Sep 1918.
