Cowden was born 22 Jun 1848 in New Springfield, Mahoning Co., Ohio. He died 7 Feb 1931 in Avilla, Noble Co., Indiana. He was buried in Avilla, Noble Co., Indiana.
He served in the Civil War from 25 Mar 1865 until 9 Oct 1865 with Company K, 18th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers. With his mustering-out pay, he bought an organ, which has remained in a Macklin family ever since. In the 1970s, it ws purchased by Carl Calvin Macklin, a great-nephew. In 1874, he moved to Noble Co. Indiana. He was a master painter and decorator and also had a small orchestra that played for social occasions. Cowden was able to play any tune on his violin after hearing it once. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Avilla, the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and Life Associates of Ben Hur.
Cowden married #9865 Carrie May Dolan.
