John was born 29 Jan 1843 in Venango Co., Pennsylvania. He died 24 Aug 1924 in Clay Center, Nebraska.
As a teenager, he moved with his parents to Piatt Co., Illinois. He worked on their farm until 30 Jul 1861, when he enllisted in the 2nd Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War. He served until 11 Aug 1864.
He returned to the farm to help his parents pay off the mortgage. Then he moved to Booneville, Missouri and went into the clothing business with an uncle. Later he moved to Atwood, Kansas where he opened a general merchandise store.
John married #25889 Laura Helen Elder.
