Alice was born 16 Jun 1858 in Ashland, Kentucky. She died 9 Dec 1929 in Lawrence, Douglas Co., Kansas. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Douglas Co., Kansas.

After her divorce, she supported herself and her children by running a boarding house. After her children were grown, she was very successful in selling Stoddard Lectures in a number of states in the West, Canada, and Hawaii. During this period, she also traveled to Australia, Philippines, Japan, China, India, Egypt, and Europe.

After returning to the United States, she again sold books to recover the money spent on the trip. During the San Francisco Exposition, she managed an exhibit for the Carnation Milk Company.

Her obituary reads: "Death came suddenly to Mr.s Wilder S. Metcalf at Memorial Hospital shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a week of apparent convalescence following an operation. She ws prominent in American Legion Auxiliary work and in social circles. The last civic work in which Mrs. Metcalf had a prominent part was as a member of the committee on arrangements for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Lawrence, held in October."

Alice married and divorced first #25917 William Lathrop Bullene.
