He moved to Washington, DC with his family. In 1827, he was a clerk for the 2nd auditor's Office in Washington and live on I St. NW. By 1850, he had become Chief Clerk of the Treasury.
[Mercy IV-96] variously gives his last name as "Mechling" and "Mechlin," but lists his children as the latter.
William married #34409 Sophia Wagner.
