[M] #34402 Joseph Mechling ( Joseph MechlingJacob MechlingJacob MechlingDiebold MechlingMartin Mechling )

Joseph died 6 Feb 1839 in New York City, New York.

From The National Intelligencer of 13 Feb 1839:

On Wednesday, the 6th instant, in the city of New York, Joseph Mechlin, M.D. eldest son of Joseph Mechlin, Esq. of this city. To his immediate relatives, and, indeed, to all who knew him, he was endeared by his affectionate disposition and by the correctness of his deportment. About ten years ago he was appointed by the Board of Managers of the American Colonization Society colonial physician; and, on the death of Dr. Randall, whose brief course was marked with great efficiency, he received his commission as Governor of the colony. In discharging the duties of that difficult station--and he faithfully discharged them--his health became impaired, nor did he ever appear to have regained what he thus lost in Africa. Some time after his return to the United States, he removed to Mobile, and there entered on a professional career, which his talents, his acquirements, and his habits promised to render eminently successful. But, while exerting his skill to relieve others, disease seized upon himself and brought him low; and the only ground, under Providence, on which to rest the hope of his recovery, seemed to be a visit to his native place, and to his father's house, every member of which was tenderly attached to him. But, on the day after his arrival in New York, they lost a son--a brother; and his young and accomplished wife, who had nursed him with an affection which none but a wife can know, was made a widow.

Dr. M. had enjoyed the advantage of early religious instruction, and, in a letter to one of his sisters (the last he ever wrote) he intimated, in reference to his contemplated visit, his impression that it would be the last time they would ever meet on earth, "but," he added, "if we believe as we have been taught, we shall meet in another world." In that world "the inhabitant shall no more say I am sick;" and there death shall never come.
