Her family's farm and early schooling were in Walkerton, Indiana. She then went on to Indiana University, where she became a four-year graduate of the I.U. School of Journalism.Upon graduation, Harriet's career in writing started at the Colorado Springs Gazette-Tribune Newspaper as a reporter. In the following years, she was employed to write feature articles for the Chicago Tribune, Business Week, McGraw-Hill, Reader's Digest, and New York Times Business Section and Sunday Editions. Her main focus was on the business world, where she became the New York Times Regional Representative for the Northwest/California Region. Harriet also was co-editor of the Northwest Skier Magazine and co-author of one book, The Team.
