Tilghman was born 6 Nov 1854 in South Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania.
At 18 he learned the milling trade, which he practiced for 6 years. In 1886 he started farming on his father's farm in S. Whitehall, where he stayed for another 6 years. Then he started driving a mill team. Just before 1900, he went back to farming, this time in Upper Macungie Twp., Pennsylvania. Eventually he returned to farming in S. Whitehall Twp. He was a deacon and elder in the Lutheran Church, and also served as a school director in Whitehall Twp.
Tilghman married #41982 Ida C. Litzenberger.
