Herman was born Jul 1855 in Mendville, Pennsylvania. He died 21 Jun 1905 in Mentor, Lake Co., Ohio. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York.

He died in the wreck of the 20th Century Limited, a luxury train that traveled the New York-Chicago route for the New York Central Railroad. This train was what brought the phrase "red carpet treatment" into use: the railroad rolled out a special red carpet at each end of the run for the passengers to walk.
