She died in her daughter, Bernice's, arms on train, somewhere in the High Sierra Mountains, returning from a visit to her daughter, Juanita, in California. When the train stopped in Reno, Nevada, she was taken to the Overland Hotel and, the next day, Bernice to her mother's body back on the train to Muncie, Indiana.

He is the son of Reuben Chaffin. He was a section foreman for the railroad. As a consequence, his family lived in many different towns along the railroad, wherever work was available.
