[F] #53 Mary Alice "Alice" Barnhart ( Jemima ThomasJohn ThomasAnna Maria MechlingJohn Theobald "Dewalt" MechlingDiebold "Theobald" MechlingDiebold MechlingMartin Mechling )

Other names for Alice: Alice Barnhart Knepper, Alice Mary Knepper, Mary Alice Knepper, Mary Alice Knepper.

Alice was born 22 Mar 1868 in Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 8 Apr 1945 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania from cerebral hemorrhage. She was buried 10 Apr 1945 in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

Her death certificate lists her birth as Greensburg rather than Hempfield Twp.

On the 1870 Federal Census of Hempfield Twp., Pennsylvania, her name is incorrectly shown as Ida.

On the 1880 Federal Census the family has moved to Unity Twp.

On her application for a marriage license, her occupation is listed as "Lady".

On the 1900 Federal Census Alice has married and is living in Greensburg with William and the older five children.

On the 1910 Federal Census of Greensburg, her mother's birthplace has switched to Ohio.

By the 1920 Federal Census of Greensburg, William has passed away and Alice is the head of household. Clark has moved out but the six younger children are still at home. Her sister, Kitty, lives next door with her husband, John Evans. On the other side live Solomon & Effie Henry, perhaps relatives of her brother-in-law, Frank Henry.

By the 1930 Federal Census only Ruth and Mary are still at home with her. Frank and Sibbie Henry live nearby with their son, John, and their daughter, Cora. Alice's son, Clark, lives next to them with Maud, Sara, and William.

By the 1940 Federal Census Ruth is no longer at home. Mary and her husband, Ken, are listed as living with Alice, although Ken was apparently living in Dodgeville, New York, probably for his job.

Alice married #35 William B. Knepper. He is the son of Benjamin C. & Mary E. (McCarty) Knepper. He is an ancestor in the Knepper Line.

Relationship notes

They married 1 May 1889 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

They were married by Rev. C. R. Dieffenbacher at Alice's home.

William was born 7 Mar 1858 in Conemaugh, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania. He died 7 Dec 1913 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania from myocarditis and meningitis. He was buried 9 Dec 1913 in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1860 Federal Census of Altoona, Blair Co., Pennsylvania, the 1870 Federal Census of Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania and the 1880 Federal Census of Altoona, he is living with his parents.

On the 1900 Federal Census of East Greensburg, Pennsylvania he is a conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The family name is spelled Kneeper. His mother's birthplace is shown as Pennsylvania instead of Maryland as it is on all of her census records.

On the 1910 Federal Census of Greensburg, Pennsylvania the family name is Knepper but indexes have transcribed it as Kueffer. He is still a passenger conductor with the railroad.

William served on the school board of Altoona.

The informant on William's death certificate is J. N. Barnhart. I'm not sure, yet, who this is. William's in-laws were both J. Barnharts but have passed away by 1913. Since the handwriting on the informant portion matches the handwriting of the undertaker information, perhaps one of Alice's kin worked at H. S. Coshey & Sons and filled out the certificate for her.
