Warren was born 9 Nov 1924 in Fayette Co., Illinois. He died 5 Sep 2007 in Mattoon, Coles Co., Illinois. He was buried in Springhill Cemetery, Wrights Corner, Fayette Co., Illinois.

The following is take from his FindAGrave record and is clearly a transcription of an obituary:

Warren Duane Lilly, 82, of Mattoon, formerly of Beecher City, passed away on September 5, 2007. He was born November 9, 1924, in Loudon Township, the elder son of Lemuel and Wreatha Bartimus Lilly.

He was a graduate of Beecher City High School. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II where he served in the South Pacific. As a member of the 4th Marine Division, he participated in the island invasions of Roi-Namur, Tinian, Saipan, and Iwo Jima.

As a result of battle wounds on Saipan, he earned his first Purple Heart medal. On Iwo Jima, he received a second Purple Heart for severe head wounds which led to a medical discharge. For his service on Iwo Jima, he was awarded the Nation's third highest decoration, the Silver Star medal, for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy" on March 1, 1945.

Upon returning home, he married Wilma Tipsword on July 19, 1947. They settled on a small farm near Beecher City. They are the parents of three sons: Brock of Beecher City, Lemuel of Flora, and Larry of Mattoon.

He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed ice fishing, hogging, or just relaxing on the bank with a fishing pole.

He served six years on the Liberty Township Board of Trustees. He was a life member of the Altamont V. F. W. Post 7676, a life member of the D. A. V. Chapter 9 in Effingham, and a member of the Beecher City American Legion Post 535.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma of 60 years and their three sons.

Other survivors include his brother, J. R. of Tower Hill and sisters Berniece Wright of Mattoon, Mary Lewis of Beecher City, and Betty Kruzan of Washington, Illinois.

He is also survived by (18) grandchildren: the children born to Lemuel Lilly and Melody Lilly; Justin, Kaleb, Cainian, Warren, and Natasha; the children of Brock Lilly and Debra Lilly; James, Nathanial, Heather, and Ian; the children born to Lemuel and Kathy Lilly; Zebidiah, Lucas, Jessica, Cole, and Griffin; and the children of Larry and Roxanne Lilly; Angela, Kristin, Briena, and Alex.

He is also survived by fourteen (14) great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death his parents; sister, Lois Himes; grandson, Ben; and great-granddaughter, Lakota.
