He retired from the United States Marine Corps after 21 years of service, receiving two Purple Hearts and many other ribbons and medals for his service. He also was a National Guard Recruiter. At the time of his death he had four granchildren and two great-grandchildren.

According to his obituary, at least two of his sisters pre-deceased him.
