George Varnum, 85, Dies; Was Councilman Here

George Varnum, Sr., 85, former councilman and well known resident of Butler, died yesterday in his home, 245 W. Brady St. Mr. Varnum served on City Council from 1914 to 1918. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, served on the official board of the church, and was the president of the Wesley Bible Class. Born in North Washington, Mr. Varnum was a son of Enoch and Katherine Boyle Varnum. He had operated a news agency in the Mellon Bank Building many years ago, and later was associated with J. Charles Dengler in a local funeral home. At one time he operated the Hudson automobile agency on Jefferson Street in Butler, and later founded Mondiald, a household cleaning product business. He retired a number of years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Robinson Varnum, whom he married in 1908; a son, George Varnum Jr. of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Cherry of Montgomery, N.Y.

Varnum- Friends of George Varnum, Sr., of 245 W. Brady St., who died Tuesday, March 14, 1961, will be received at the Thompson-Paul Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday from the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Newton H. Fritchey, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Thompson-Paul.

Mrs. Bertha Robinson Varnum, 88, of the Evergreen Nursing Home, Harmony, formerly of West Brady Street, died at 3:30 a.m. today at Evergreen. Born in Butler, Sept. 3, 1885, she was the daughter of the late Eli and Emily Ewing Robinson. Her husband, George Varnum Sr., died March 14, 1961. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, Butler, and was a former Sunday School teacher there. Surviving are a son, George Varnum Jr. of Pittsburgh; two granddaughters, three great grandchildren, and a brother, Donald E. Robinson of Pittsburgh. A daughter and a son preceded her in death.
