#181 Henry Edward "Edward" Power ( George Power )

Other names for Edward: Edward Powers, Henry Edward Powers, John Edward Powers.

Edward was born 6 Apr 1846 in Pennsylvania. He died 23 Apr 1892 in Lamar Twp., Clinton Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Mackeyville, Clinton Co., Pennsyvlania.

Many compilations list him as John Edward or Edward John. Part of this confusion comes from his son, Arthur's, death certificate. However, his marriage license and early censuses show Henry Edward and his grandchildren knew him as that.

He is living with his parents in Lamar Twp., Clinton Co., Pennsylvania through 1860. The 1850 Federal Census shows the surname Power, consistent with the family census entries going back to 1830. The 1860 Federal Census shows the surname Powers.

He is a day laborer on the 1870 Federal Census.

The 1880 Federal Census lists him as a farm laborer.

His son, Clair's, death certificate lists him as Edward and says he was a mechanic and owned a garage.

Henry died before the consistent use of death certificates in Pennsylvania (1906) and none has been found so far.

Edward married and divorced #182 Susannah "Susan" Gettig. She is the daughter of Jacob & Anna (Rudy) Gettig. She is an ancestor in the Gettig Line.

Marriage notes

They married 30 Nov 1867 in Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.

They divorced Bef 1900.

Other names for Susan: Susan Allen, Susan Ann Eyer, Susan Powers.

Susan was born 1 Dec 1849 in Madisonburg, Centre Co., Pennsylvania. She died 23 Apr 1933 in Lock Haven, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania from "shock and age" following surgery. She was buried 26 Apr 1933 in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Lamar Twp., Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1850 Federal Census she is in Gregg Twp., Centre Co., Pennsylvania with her parents.

On the 1860 Federal Census we find Susan living in Gregg Twp. with her mother, now a widow, and her brother, Zachariah. Her name is spelled Gettich on the census.

She appears on the 1870 Federal Census and the 1880 Federal Census with Edward.

On the 1900 Federal Census she is divorced and living in Lamar Twp., Clinton Co., Pennsylvania. She has Walter living with her.

On the 1910 Federal Census she is living in Bald Eagle Twp., Clinton Co., Pennsylvania with her third husband and Walter.

On the 1920 Federal Census she is living in Flemington, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania with her fourth husband.

At the time of her death, she was living in Youngdale, Pennsylvania.

Family stories say that Susan was quite the domineering woman, smoking a pipe and ruling with an iron hand. As her children became old enough to work, they were placed on neighboring farms and had to work for their room and board. Arthur was placed on the Krider farm at age eight. His brother, Clair, joined him there. Harvey was with the Brungards, James with the Oscar Knapp family. It seems that only Walter stayed home through his teenage years.

On the 1930 Federal Census she is in Wayne, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.

The following is from an un-sourced obituary and, although the husband's name does not seem correct, Susan's identity is pretty certain from the children's names:

Mrs. John Eyer

Mrs. Susan Ann Eyer, wife of John Eyer, of Youngdale, died on Sunday morning at 7.45 o'clock at the Lock Haven Hospital following an illness with complications. She was aged 83 years and had resided all her life in Clinton county. In addition to her husband she leaves the following children, Mrs. Harry Paul, Ontario, Canada, J.Powers, Derry, H.M. Powers, Walter E. Powers, Clair R. Powers and Mrs. Effie Williams, all of this city.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the home in Youngdale. Interment was made in the Cedar Hill cemetery.
