#37961 John George "George" Rosensteel ( Johannes Rosensteel )

Other names for George: John George Rosentiel.

George was born 20 Apr 1753 in York Springs, Adams Co., Pennsylvania. He was christened 23 Apr 1753 in Christ Lutheran Church, York, York Co., Pennsylvania. He died 9 Oct 1834 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland.

Roscoe Adams' membership application for the Sons of the American Revolution contains the following:

In the Journal of the Committee of Observation of the Middle Dist. of Frederick Co. Md. Sept. 12, 1775 to Oct. 24, 1776 George Rosensteel (Rosenstiel) appears as one of the associators. (See Maryland Historical Magazine Vol. XI P. 172.) On Nov. 29, 1775 he is recorded therein as 3rd Corporal in Capt. Phillip Thomas' Company, Fourth Battalion of Militia of Middle Dist. of Frederick Co., Md.

Early in the year 1778 in accordance with the earnest request of Congress, the legislature passed an act to raise 2902 men, including the two artillary [sic] companies already in camp and the volunteers already on hand within the state (The Militia?)

To insure their speedy enlistment the legislature appointed to each county the number of men required according to the number of Militia in each. The proportion assigned to Frederick Co. was 309. See Scharf's History of Western Maryland Vol. 1 P. 141.

That portion of this quota was allotted to the German Regiment is shown by the following excerpt from a letter of General Washington's to Gov. Johnson (of Md.) dated April 8, 1779 Vis:= "By an allotment of the quota of troops to be reaised [sic] by said state (Md.) made by Congress on the 26th of Feb. 1778, the German Battalion was wholly attached to the State of Maryland and considered as her Regt. since which it hath done duty in that line." See D. W. Neads "The Penna. Germans in the Settlement of Maryland." Chapter XVII, The German Regiments.

It may here be added that the preserved record of the Militia organization of Frederick Co. Md. during the revolution consists of but fragments.

On May 20, 1778 George Rosensteel, being a married man with a young and growing family procured a substitute to serve in the German Regiment (of Md.) in his stead "as part of the quota of said County (Frederick Co.) agreeable to the late act of assembly." See Maryland History Magazine Vo. VI P. 260.

It is evident from what has been written above that the quota of several counties to the German Regiment of Md. were enlisted from the Militia of these counties; and the conclusion derived therefrom is that George Rosensteel was still enrolled in the Militia of Frederick Co., Md. when he was appointed to the quota for the German Regiment in 1778.

Other sources give his death date as 10 Sep 1834.

George married #62145 Susanna Steiger.

Susanna was born 1757. She died 20 Jul 1827.
