#588 Caroline Rosensteel ( Daniel RosensteelJohn Andrew "Andrew" RosensteelJohn Andreas "Andrew" RosensteelJohannes Rosensteel )

Caroline was born 1 Jan 1840 in Pennsylvania. She died 19 Mar 1881 in Clearfield, Clearfield Co., Pennsylvania.

Some genealogies list her name as Marian, but this does not match census records.

The 1850 Federal Census shows her living in Cookstown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1860 Federal Census, we find her in Hempfield Twp., apparently already a widow from her first marriage as she is listed as the head of household. James and Alfred are shown also.

See the comments under William Jenkins Copeland on why I believe she appears in Penn Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania on the 1870 Federal Census.

The 1880 Federal Census of Cokeville, Pennsylvania lists a child, William, with the surname blank, which would imply Copeland. However, as noted in the entry for her husband I believe this to be the individual listed as William Rosensteel on other censuses. William's and Caroline's third child was William Armor Copeland. Although he is listed as Armor on the census, he went by William A. Copeland later in life. It seems unlikely that there were two sons from that relationship, alive at the same time, named William. It does raise the question of what William Rosensteel's relationship with Caroline was. Does the 1880 census have the relationship listed incorrectly and he was actually a younger brother or nephew of hers?

Caroline married first #589 Alfred Hixenbaugh.

Alfred died Bef 1860.

Caroline married third #587 William Jenkins Copeland. He is the son of James & Cynthia A. (Carnahan) Copeland. He is an ancestor in the Copeland Line.

William was born 14 Jun 1839 in Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 26 May 1917.

According to [Hedley], he spent almost his entire life in Westmoreland Co., first as a farmer and later as a coal miner.

On the 1850 Federal Census he is shown as William J. Pool, his mother having remarried by that time, and is living at home in Hempfield Twp.

On the 1860 Federal Census he is still living with mother and stepfather in Hempfield Twp. and is a laborer. His surname has reverted to Copeland.

He enlisted on Oct 16, 1862 as a private in Co. H, 168th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and mustered out with the Company on 23 Jul 1863. The following is taken from Samuel P. Bates' History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865:

This regiment was raised in the counties of Westmoreland, Fayette, Greene, Beaver, Allegeny, and Erie. The men rendezvoused at Camp Howe, near Pittsburg, during the latter part of October, 1862, where the companies were organized, and the following field officers were chosen: Joseph Jack, of Westmoreland county, Colonel; John Murphy, of Washington county, Lieutenant Colonel; John J. Cree, of Fayette county, Major. Clothing, arms, and accoutrements, and the State colors, were received on the 2d of December, and on the evening of the same day, the regiment started for the front. Upon its arrival at Fortress Monroe, it was ordered to Newport News, where it remained some two weeks, with the command of General Corcoran. It was thence ordered to Suffok, Virginia, and was there assigned to Spinola's Brigade, subsequently known as the Keystone Brigade. From Suffolk, the brigade was ordered to Newbern, North Carolina, whither it proceeded by way of the Chowan River, arriving on the 1st of January, 1863. The regiment was here thoroughly drilled, and the officers instructed in their duties. It was out upon several expeditions against the enemy, but did not come to battle. Soon after the retreat of the enemy under General Hill from before Little Washington, which he had been closely besieging, the Keystone Brigade was ordered thither to relieve the garrison. Here it remained until the 28th of June, when it was sent to Fortress Monroe, and thence to White House, to co-operate with forces under General Dix, in a demonstration towards Richmond. For nearly a week the troops were out upon this duty, and here the intelligence was first received of the invasion of Pennsylvania. A strong desire was at once manifested by the members of the Keystone Brigade, to be led to the support of the Union army, who expressed a willingness to remain beyond the period for which they were to serve. This wish was gratified, and the brigade was sent to Harper's Ferry, where it occupied Maryland Heights. The battle at Gettysburg had, in the meantime, been fought, and as the army under Meade approached the Potomac in pursuit of Lee, the regiment joined it at Boonesboro. After the enemy had escaped into Virginia, the regiment was ordered for duty to Middletown, Maryland, and a few days later to Harrisburg, where, on the 25th of July, it was mustered out of service.

William was actually discharged on 23 Jul 1863 according to his Certificate of Service.

.

We appear to lose William and family on the 1870 Federal Census. However, I believe he is listed as John Copeland in Penn Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. The first name doesn't match what we expect and his age (21) and that of his wife (19) are just about 10 years off what would be expected, so it seems a stretch. However:

Since there appears to be no other trace of a William Copeland, Caroline Copeland, or Ada Copeland that is even remotely close to a match, I believe this is probably a census taker having a bad day and getting the ages wrong by a decade.

It does raise the question of whether his middle name was John and not Jenkins.

The 1880 Federal Census of Cokeville, Pennsylvania lists him as a laborer. Note that his family extends onto the next page which is listed as the census for Derry Twp.

According to the Veterans Schedule of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, he was living there in 1890.

On the 1900 Federal Census he shows up in Hempfield Twp., Pennsylvania. He served a term as a Justice of the Peace in Hempfield Twp. He's now married to Christine. Two other Copelands live with them: Armor and Albert.

This Armor does not appear to be William's son of that name as he is listed as a boarder, is 40 years old instead of 26, and is a day laborer instead of a studying to be a physician. Also, son Armor would have gotten married two years previously. How this Armor hooks into the family tree is not known.

Albert is also an unknown quantity. He is 14 years old, born too late to be a child of Caroline but before the marriage to Christine. Additionally, Christine is listed as having borne no children. One possibility is that Albert is a child by some relationship that occurred between Caroline and Christine. However, Albert's relationship to William is left blank although the census taker seemed generally diligent about entering "son". It's also possible that he is a child of Armor, although he is listed above Armor and his surname is dittoed to William's while Armor's is re-entered; there's no telling if this is significant or not. He may just be a foster child or an employee or some relation of Caroline's living with them and the census taker missed the different surname.

On the 1910 Federal Census he is living with his half-brother, Finley Poole, in Flat Branch, Illinois. He is listed as William Coplin. He is working as a farm laborer.
