#610 Daniel Rosensteel ( John Andrew "Andrew" RosensteelJohn Andreas "Andrew" RosensteelJohannes Rosensteel )

Daniel was born 11 Nov 1820 in Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 20 Nov 1897. He was buried in Middletown Cemetery, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

Some sources give his death as 1862.

He lived in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.

[Hedley] gives the month of his birth as January.

On the 1850 Federal Census of Cookstown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, he is a laborer. Sarah Berry, age 60, presumably a relative through his mother, is living with them.

We may find Daniel in Brownsville, Fayette Co., on the 1860 Federal Census. This is about seven miles from Cookstown, now called Fayette City, and I haven't found any other good candidate. There are a couple of discrepancies, however. His birth date has moved 10 years back, 1810 instead of 1820 as it was shown on the 1850 Census. His birth place is shown as Germany instead of Pennsylvania. His wife is named Matilda instead of Mary. Some researchers have identified her as a second wife, Matilda Sanforth. I cannot make out his profession; it seems to read Teaser. There is a young girl, Bella, age 3 living with them.

Assuming the Daniel in Brownsville is a correct identification, I haven't found him in 1870 but he does appear in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 1880 Federal Census. Bella is no longer in the home but William is. Daniel is shown as a "peddlar of notions" and his birthplace has reverted to Pennsylvania.

Some give his death as 1887 but his grave marker shows 1897.

Daniel married first #38048 Mary Ann Elless.

Other names for Mary: Mary Ann Rosensteel, Mary Ellen Rosensteel.

Mary was born 1819 in Pennsylvania.

Jan Bunten shows her name as Mary Ellen while the 1850 census shows her as Mary Ann.
