Alternate line: ( Mary Catherine "Mayme" SeylerEllen Catherine AllisonAnna Catherine SeylerJohn Peter "Peter" SeylerJoseph Seyler )

Other names for Madeline: Joyce M. Dillashaw, Joyce Dillashaw.

Madeline was born 12 Aug 1915 in Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died May 1967 in Miami, Florida.

Madeline was a difficult child for her father to handle after the death of her mother and his subsequent remarriage. Arthur was a very strict disciplinarian and most of the kids rebelled against his autocratic ways by leaving home as soon as they could. He couldn't seem to control Madeline at all and, in a fit of rage, he had her sent to a juvenile detention facility. She was probably about 16 at the time. She later told stories of how she was treated there, including beatings with a rubber hose.

When she was released, she went to live with her sister, Anna, in Latrobe. There she met and married a handsome young man named George Alexander. They were both a bit too young for marriage, but they set up housekeeping in a small two-room apartment in the old Loyal Hotel in Latrobe.

However, one day her niece went to visit her and found her in bed, barely able to move; George had beaten her. With the help of some friends, Madeline ran away from her husband, headed to Miami, divorced him and started a new life. She used the name Joyce and appears in the Florida Death Index as Joyce Dillashaw.

She was double-counted on the 1940 Census. She appears on Lock St. in Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She also appears on the 1940 Census in Dade Co., Florida living in the New Seminole Hotel in Miami.

By the 1945 Florida Census, she has met Dilly and remarried, and has her first two children.
