Marriage notes

They married Abt 1870.

J.B. was born 31 Mar 1843 in Glencoe, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. He died 18 Sep 1929 in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania from senile arteriosclerosis and hyperpiesis. He was buried 21 Sep 1929 in Newmans Creek Cemetery, North Lawrence, Stark Co., Ohio.

A family story has it that John was born in Germany and came to the United States as a boy with his maternal grandparents after the death of his parents. His son, Charles, lists his father's birth place as Germany on the 1920 Census. However, Florence Deffler (granddaughter-in-law), who knew him, said the story wasn't correct and that he was born in this country. The census records...other than 1920...bear this out, showing J.B. as born in Pennsylvania and the son of the John Deffler who came to the United States from Germany.

He's living with his parents in Southampton, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania on the 1850 Federal Census. The town of Northampton is split off from Southampton in 1851 and we find him with his parents on the 1860 Federal Census, working as a farm laborer, and the 1870 Federal Census with Ellen, working as a house carpenter.

In 1879 John apparently turned his hand to sales. He and a partner took out the following advertisement in The Somerset Herald.

By the 1880 Federal Census they are living next door to his parents in Northampton and he is listed as a farmer, again.

An 1876 land ownership map shows various parcels owned by J.B. and his father.

The 1900 Federal Census has them living on Pine St. in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania with the two younger children. J.B. is again a carpenter.

In the intervening years, J.B. took to inventing. He patented an "Apparatus for Elevating Bags, Barrel, &c." The application was filed 2 Dec 1891 and awarded on 10 May 1892 as U.S. Patent #474,653. The introduction begins:

Be it known that I, John B. Deffler, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in Apparatus for Elevating Bags, Barrels, and other Articles, of which the following is a specimen.

This invention has for its object to provide a novel apparatus capable of use for various purposes — such, for instance, as loading or unloaded vehicles, elevating bags, barrels, boxes, or other articles to the shoulders of persons, transporting loads from place to place, and sustaining bags while they are being filled...

It's interesting to note that J.B.'s patent was referenced as prior art over 100 years later in a patent application for a "Method and apparatus for hoisting a vehicular clutch."

On the 1910 Federal Census we find J.B. and Ellen in North Lawrence, Stark Co., Ohio. A city directory from 1915 lists him as a cabinet maker.

In 1920 Federal Census he is living with his daughter, Anna Drumm, on Locust St. in Johnstown. Here we see his name spelled Doeffler.

The News-Herald of Franklin, Pennsylvania noted on 19 Sep 1929:
