He served in the Civil War with Co. D of the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was discharged after 11 months due to a pre-war leg fracture that made marching a problem.

A portion of an obituary for his wife from the State Herald of Holyoke, Colorado states:

In 1879 they moved to York County, Nebraska, where they resided until 1886 when they came to Colorado and located on a homestead where they continued to make their home at the time of her death.
