#6 Ruth Leona Knepper ( Mary Alice "Alice" BarnhartJemima ThomasJohn ThomasJohn Bernhard "Barnet" ThomasHeinrich Gerhardt "Gerhardt" ThomasJohann Peter ThomasJacob Thomas )

Other names for Ruth: Ruth Knepper Copeland.

Ruth was born 20 Apr 1900 in E. Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 17 Mar 1987 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She was buried in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1900 Federal Census of East Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania her name is given incorrectly as Ethel. I guess the census taker heard "Ruth L." poorly. She appears on the 1910 Federal Census in Greensburg with her parents.

By the 1920 Federal Census and through the 1930 Federal Census she is living with her mother, her father having passed away, and is a stenographer for a lumber company.

On the 1940 Federal Census she and Charles are married with children and living in Greensburg.

Ruth married #5 Charles Daniel Copeland. He is the son of Charles Daniel & Anna May (White) Copeland. He is an ancestor in the Copeland Line.

Marriage notes

They married 19 Mar 1931 in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.

Charles was born 9 Aug 1900 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 23 Nov 1977 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania from lung cancer. He was buried 26 Nov 1977 in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1910 Federal Census and the 1920 Federal Census he is living with his parents in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

He graduated from Greensburg High School in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He wanted to be an engineer, but his father wanted him to practice law and to attend Franklin and Marshall College. In the summer between high school and college, he decided he would rather attend Princeton and wrote them a letter asking to be admitted. They accepted him in the Class of '22, where he was known as "Red" and "Cope." He played basketball for the university his first three years. He did, however, agree to practice law and received his L.L.D. from Harvard University in 1925 and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar.

He served with the S.A.T.C. at Princeton during World War I, with an honorable discharge. It lists him as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall, blue eyes and red hair. He was 6 feet, 1 inches tall at a later date.

On the 1930 Federal Census he is living at home; he's still a year away from his marriage to Ruth. His occupation is listed as a lawyer in private practice. He is shown as a veteran of World War I.

On the 1940 Federal Census of Greensburg he's shown as an attorney working in the District Attorney's office, making $7,500 a year. Their home is worth $14,000 and they have two young women living in the household as servants.

He served as District Attorney for Westmoreland County. In 1944, he was elected to the Common Pleas Court, a position held by his father before him. He was the last judge to serve 30 years on the bench. In his second and third terms, he was elected on both the Republican and Democrat tickets.

He was a member of the Elks, honorary member of the NSDAR, a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, and a ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church.
