#611 James White ( Andrew WhiteJames WhiteAndrew White )

James was born Jul 1834 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 25 Jul 1921 in Tyrone, Blair Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

He is living with his parents on the 1840 Federal Census and the 1850 Federal Census of Unity Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

The 1860 Federal Census of Unity Twp. shows him as a barkeeper. His father has passed away and his mother is the head of household.

The 1870 Federal Census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania shows him as a conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. His real estate is worth $1,500 and his personal possessions are worth $800. Susan, Laura, Elliot and Charles are with him, as well as Ruth Elliot (probably Susan's sister) and her son, William.

On the 1880 Federal Census of Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, he is in the livery business. He is now married to Mary Jane.

The 1900 Federal Census of Greensburg has him listed as a laborer.

On the 1910 Federal Census he is a hotel clerk. There are no children at home but they do have a couple of boarders living with them.

On the 1920 Federal Census, at the age of 85, he's listed as on the "tip staff" of the court house.

James married first #612 Susan Elliot.

Other names for Susan: Susan Elliot White.

Susan was born 4 Oct 1841. She died 15 Jul 1871. She was buried in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

Based upon the death dates, she probably died from complications from the birth of her son, Valentine.

James married second #613 Mary Jane Patterson. She is the daughter of James & Anne (McVay) Patterson.

Marriage notes

They married 2 Oct 1873.

Other names for Mary: Mary Jane White, Jane Patterson.

Mary was born 28 Sep 1841 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania. She died 30 Dec 1920 in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She was buried in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

She is also in the group tintype «here».

She appears on the 1850 Federal Census in Nottingham, Washington Co., Pennsylvania and the 1860 Federal Census of North Strabane, Washington Co. with her parents. In the latter she is listed as Jane.

She is difficult to locate on the 1870 Census. Her parents have moved to Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania but she is not listed with them. There is a Mary Patterson still back in Washington Co. but, although this census doesn't list the relationship to the head of household, she appears to be married to John Patterson and is about five years too old. There is an unmarried Mary Patterson in South Huntingdon in Westmoreland Co. but she appears in the same location married to a Mr. Markle on the 1880 Census when we've identified our ancestor elsewhere. Probably the best bet is the Mary Patterson found on the 1870 Federal Census of Rostraver, Westmoreland Co. She is about four years too young but she is living in the household of James & Maggie Patterson as a housekeeper. James is the same age as our Mary's brother of that name, whom we have not found elsewhere in the state.

She appears on the 1880 Federal Census, the 1900 Federal Census, the 1910 Federal Census and the 1920 Federal Census in Greensburg with James.
