His birthplace, and that of Chae, are given as Pinsk, Poland on his son's death certificate but Pinsk was not part of Poland at the time that Joseph was born. It was part of the Russian Empire until the Polish-Soviet War. At the end of those hostilities in 1920, Pinsk became part of Poland, where it remained until annexed by Nazi Germany. At the end of World War II, it became part of the Soviet Union. With the breakup of the latter in 1991, Pinsk became part of Belarus.
