#11 Slave "Sadie" Relkin ( Avram "Nathan" Relkin )

Other names for Sadie: Sadie Berger.

Sadie was born Abt 1896 in Slutsk, Russia. She died 20 Sep 1943. She was buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens Co., New York.

She appears on the passenger list of the ship Rijndam, which sailed from Rotterdam and arrived in New York on 11 Jun 1907 as Slave. Her birth year is given as Abt 1896. She is listed as illiterate with dark complexion, black hair and blues eyes.

She appears on the 1910 Census in Manhattan, New York, living with her mother and siblings. She is a sleeve maker in a waist house.

On the 1920 Census of Paterson, New Jersey, Sadie appears with Oscar. It shows both that her initial naturalization papers were filed and also that she was naturalized in 1913; these two facts are somewhat inconsistent.

By the 1930 Census she is in the Bronx. Her mother and sister, Bella, are living with them, as well as a nephew, Louis Selnick. Since Sadie's sisters didn't marry Selnicks, we can presume this is a relative of Oscar's.

On the 1940 Census, Yetta is no longer present. They have a boarder, Jennie Linser, living with them.

Sadie married #283 Oscar Berger.

Marriage notes

They married 1919.

Oscar was born Abt 1892 in Russia-Poland. He died 3 May 1975. He was buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens Co., New York.

The 1920 Census shows him as born in Russia-Poland. This notation is due to the Polish-Soviet War, which caused the border areas to change hands regularly.

The 1930 Census will indicate that it was more on the Polish side of this border than Sadie's birth place, which became listed as Russia. He is listed as the proprietor of a store. The type of store is somewhat illegible but appears to say "radios". Note that William, his brother-in-law, worked in a radio store.

On the 1940 Census of the Bronx he is a salesman for an wholesale grocery store.
