#191 Judel "Julius" Relkin ( Avram "Nathan" Relkin )

Julius was born 25 Dec 1888/1890 in Slutsk, Russia. He died 5 Feb 1959 in New York City, New York. He was buried 6 Feb 1959 in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, New Jersey.

He is in the group picture «here».

According to his marriage license, he was born in 1888.

Julius shows as Judel Relkin on the passenger list of the ship Noordam out of Rotterdam, departing 24 Aug 1906, arriving in New York on 4 Sep 1906. He is a tailor and literate. His passage was paid by his brother; the 1910 Census shows that Samuel came over earlier. He was going to stay with his uncle, H. Cominsky, who lived in New York City. He is traveling with Leib Weiner, who appears to be a Cominsky cousin from Slutsk. We are not certain who Leib is, perhaps he is Lewis, son of Yudah. Leib was going to stay with his uncle, M. Cominsky (Meyer?). There is also a Yankel Weiner from Slutsk traveling on the ship. He is not meeting a Cominsky, but may be one of Leib's relatives.

He made the Declaration of Intention for Naturalization on 20 May 1919 at Ellis Island. At the time, he was a cigar dealer. The picture above shows him standing outside a cigar and stationery store. He planned to take his Oath of Allegiance on 22 May in Manhattan. The declaration was witnessed by Samuel Cominsky (his uncle?), and his brother-in-law, Keeve Cohen. He was 5'5" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

On the 1910 Federal Census he is in Manhattan, New York. It shows he immigrated in 1905 (incorrect), two years before his mother and younger siblings, and one year after his older brother, Samuel. He speaks English and is a sleeve maker in a waist house. His naturalization status is left blank.

On the 1915 New York Census, he says he works in a stationery store. There is also the entry in the Country of Origin as "Russia Poland". This is probably a reference to the fact that the Polish-Soviet War was going on and Belarus was torn between the two.

He appears on the 1920 Federal Census of the Bronx, New York. His age would put his birth date Abt. 1890. It shows he immigrated from Russia in 1906 and was naturalized 1919. Julius Relkin was in the women's clothing business ("ladies' dresses" on the 1920 Census, and "dress company manufacturer" on the 19C0 census) with Henry Cohen.

He appears on the 1925 New York Census with his naturalization incorrectly stated as 1918.

He appears on the 1930 Federal Census of Manhattan with Ida, Estelle and Albert. He is a manufacturer of dresses.

On the 1940 Federal Census of New York he appears with Ida and Albert.

His World War II Draft Registration Card shows us that he had no middle name and gives his actual birth date. It also gives the name of the dress company he owned: Bernice Dress Company, 225 West 35th St. in New York.

Julius married #190 Ida Cohen. She is the daughter of Berl & Basche Gute (Basewitz) Cohen. She is an ancestor in the Cohen Line.

Marriage notes

They married 14 Oct 1912 in Manhattan, New York Co., New York.

The marriage certificate was witnessed by her brother-in-law, Ben Gewertz, and by a Goodman (first name illegible). Family story has it that the Goodmans are relatives but the exact connection is not known.

Other names for Ida: Ida Relkin.

Ida was born 1 Oct 1888 in Pinsk, Russia. She died 5 Feb 1980 in Bronx, Bronx Co., New York.

She is in the group picture «here» and «here».

According to Julius' Declaration of Intent, Ida was born on 1 February, 1890 in Pinsk, Russia. The date given here comes from the Social Security Death Index and is consistent with her age as reported on the 1910 Census.

She appears on the 1910 Federal Census of Manhattan, age 22, working as a seamstress. It shows she immigrated in 1905.

She appears on the 1915 New York Census. There is also the entry in the Country of Origin of "Russia Poland". This is probably a reference to the fact that the Polish-Soviet War was going on and Belarus was torn between the two.

Ida appears on the 1920 Federal Census of the Bronx, New York with her husband and Estelle. It shows that she immigrated from Russia a year earlier than Julius did. Another interesting note is that Julius is listed as speaking Jewish, while Ida and Estelle are listed as speaking Yiddish.

She appears on the 1925 New York Census with her naturalization date incorrectly stated as 1918.

She appears on the 1930 Federal Census of Manhattan with Julius, Estelle and Albert. Her birth year has moved to Abt 1890.

On the 1940 Federal Census of New York she appears with Julius and Albert.
