Hugh was born 30 Mar 1733 in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was baptised 8 Apr 1733 in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, Scotland.

His baptism was at "Kirmaiden by Drummore."

A Hugh Boyd shows in the marriage register twice in 1765: one to Margaret Shank on 23 Jul 1765 and one to Jean Kelly on 1 Aug 1765. Whether either of these are our Hugh, or if there are two Hughs (we only found one birth record) or the same one marrying, divorcing, re-marrying is unknown.

However, these records are further confused by a record of a son, John, born "antenuptual" (their term) to the second pair on 18 Jan 1766 and baptised on 9 Feb 1766, which would not be antenuptual given the above marriage date.

The first pair had a daughter, Margaret, born 11 Jun 1766 and baptised on 14 Jun 1766.
