James was born 1829 in Washington Co., Maryland. He died 15 Jan 1870 in Hendricks Co., Indiana. He was buried in Ayers Cemetery, Hendricks Co., Indiana.

The 1850 Census lists him as a shoemaker living with Wiley Lloyd Bates in Indianapolis.

He was a 4' 11" tall with a light complexion and hazel eyes.

He enlisted in the Union Army as Pvt., Co. A., 148th Indiana Infantry, serving from 5 Feb 1865 to 5 Sep 1865. The unit organized on 25 Feb at Indianapolis and, on 18 Feb, it left for Nashville, Tennessee for immediate duty. Until muster out, the regiment was kept employed in guard duty in the interior of Tennessee.

James married #51702 Sarah Jane "Jane" Bates.

In 1871 she and her children were received into the Society of Friends in Bridgeport.

In the 1890 Census of Civil War Veterans & Widows she is living in Craig, Burt Co., Nebraska under the name of Sarah Jane Franssar.
