He enlisted in the Union Army as Pvt., Co. A., 148th Indiana Infantry, serving from 5 Feb 1865 to 5 Sep 1865. The unit organized on 25 Feb at Indianapolis and, on 18 Feb, it left for Nashville, Tennessee for immediate duty. Until muster out, the regiment was kept employed in guard duty in the interior of Tennessee.
