[M] #16014 Abraham Weaver Thomas ( John ThomasAnna Maria MechlingJohn Theobald "Dewalt" MechlingDiebold "Theobald" MechlingDiebold MechlingMartin Mechling )

Abraham was born 19 Jun 1839 in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was baptised 6 Dec 1839 in First Lutheran Church, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 13 Aug 1924.

He was wounded in the foot on 14 May 1864 at Drury's Bluff, Virginia. This was not the Battle of Drury's Bluff, which was fought on 15 May 1862, but probably in the fighting leading up to the Siege of Petersburg, which started 15 June 1864 and was a period of trench warfare that presaged the battles of World War I.

The following is a letter to his sister, Jemima, written in April of 1864.

Spanish Wells, SC April the 24th 1864

Dear Sister I seat myself this Sabath morning to write you a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. We are still at the same place yet but we have had marching orders for some time but I don't know when we will leave but I think we will go to day or tomorrow. I think we are going into the army of the potomac. Iff we do go there we will have some fun. For my part I am glad we are going away for it is getting very warm and the nats and muskeetoes are nearly eating me up. They are as big in this country as sheep in your country. They are sending all the white soldiers out of this department and bringing black ones here. We have not had any trouble on our picket line of late. This is a very dreary day in camp. It is cloudy and wet to day. Well I have run out of news. I will have to close for this time. Well I got some pictures taken and I will send you one in this letter so you can see how fat I am. I am well only I was on picket the other night and caught a bad cold the first cold I had since I came down here. So nothing more at present. Hoping to hear from you soon. Again give my respects to all the folks and my love to all of you. So good By from your Brother
