Bernard was born 21 Apr 1837 in Perry Co., Ohio. He died 17 Apr 1896 from pneumonia. He was buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Glenford, Perry Co., Ohio.

He was a farmer, stock breeder and horseman with his own racetrack on his farm. This farm as been in the Mechling family since it was acquired by Bernard's grandfather, Jacob. Bernard made bricks on his property, which he used to build the house. It is one of the finest in Perry Co., and the only one to be featured in the 1875 Atlas of Hopewell Twp., Perry Co., Ohio. As of 1997, the farm and house were owned by his great-grandson, Steven. Bernard was also superintendent of Sunday Schools in St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Bernard married first #24035 Margaret Humbarger.

Margaret was born 26 Oct 1838. She died 16 Jan 1863.

She is the daughter of John & Mary Ann (Basore) Humbarger.
