Winfield was born 10 May 1914. He died 4 May 1954 in Vincent, Louisiana. He was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, Ohio.

He was a graduate of Ohio State University. He was an actuarial assistant for the Ohio Industrial Commission for about seven years. He served in World War II from 1941 to 1946. In 1951, he rejoined the Army, reaching the rank of Major by the time of his death.
