#66522 Levi Shockey ( Christian ShockeyJohann Christoph Schäcke )

Other names for Levi: Lewis Levi Shockey.

Levi was born 16 May 1797 in Franklin Co., Pennsylvania. He died 14 Jun 1868 in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in Wellersburg Church Cemetery, Wellersburg, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

Some sources list him as Lewis Levi Shockey.

At age 13 he is probably the boy age 10-15 listed on Christian Shockey's entry for the 1810 Federal Census in Elk Lick, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

On the 1820 Federal Census we see John and, presumably, Barbara and Edward in Salisbury Twp. in Elk Lick.

On the 1830 Federal Census they are in Elk Lick. Guessing identities other than the head of household is always problematic on 1840 and earlier censuses but we see a woman who is probably Barbara, a boy who might be Edward and two girls who are probably Adeline and Elizabeth. There is also a girl, age 10-14, that doesn't seem to match a known daughter. She may be a daughter who had moved out by 1840, a fostered child, or a servant. There is an older woman living with them who may be his mother, Mary, since his father died the year before.

On the 1840 Federal Census they are still in Elk Lick. We appear to see Barbara, Edward, Adeline, Elizabeth, Hulda, Jairus and Sabilla. There is also a 10-14 year old male unaccounted for; this may represent a son in the age gap between Elizabeth and Hulda. The older woman seen in 1830 is still with them.

On the 1850 Federal Census they are still in Elk Lick and he is working as a joiner. His birth place is shown as Pennsylvania. One of his son, Edward's, censuses gives it as West Virginia. A later census will show Maryland.

On the 1860 Federal Census they are found in Wellersburg, Pennsylvania. He is a carpenter. Elmira is living with them; see the introduction for why I believe her to be a granddaughter.

Levi married #66555 Barbara Miller.

Other names for Barbara: Barbara Shockey.

Barbara was born 1795/1800 in Pennsylvania. She died 1883. She was buried in Wellersburg Church Cemetery, Wellersburg, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

She appears with the family on the 1830 Federal Census, the 1840 Federal Census, the 1850 Federal Census and the 1860 Federal Census.

On the 1870 Federal Census we find Barbara and Christian living with the Rosenberg family near her son, Edward. This census does not provide relationship information although we find out from 1880 that Adeline Rosenberg is her daughter.

On the 1880 Federal Census we find her living with the same family, although they are now called the Rosenbaums.
