#1969 John White ( Andrew White )

John was born 1759 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 9 Aug 1832 in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

He was born near Antietam Creek in what was then Cumberland County (now Franklin County), Pennsylvania. The Pedigree Resource File entry gives his birth as 3 Sep 1757 and his death date as 29 Oct 1832. It shows John as the son of Andrew & Jean but I'm uncertain about identification of that individual with this as that one shows John married to Nancy instead of Margaret Patton and has him moving to New York. I've not included the descent from that source.

In 1776 he came out to live with his brother, James, near Hannastown, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania and helped manage the farm until 1779 when their parents made it their permanent home. After marriage, John and Margaret lived on the White Farm until 1827 when he sold it and moved to Ligonier, Westmoreland Co.

During the Revolution he did patriotic service in Pennsylvania as a Scout. He served in the Army during the Whiskey Rebellion and, sometime around 1795, he was Captain of a company which made Fort Palmer in Westmoreland County and Fort McCartney in Indiana County their headquarters. The same source shows that he served as a Captain in the Pennsylvania Militia during the War of 1812. It shows his wife's name as Mary instead of Margaret.

On the 1800 Census of Unity Twp., we see what would be John and Margaret. In addition, it would appear that his parents lived with them as there are two older individuals listed and Andrew is not separately enumerated on the census. Beyond those four, there are four younger individuals: a boy b. 1790-1800, which I'm matching to James; two males b. 1775-1784; a female b. 1785-1790. Since the latter three were born well before the marriage, I'm not including them as children. If Jean was born in 1799, there's no evidence of her on this census.

With the 1810 Census, we see: one boy born 1795-1800, presumably James; two boys born 1800-1810, presumably Matthew and John; one female born 1795-1800, presumably Jean; two females born 1800-1810, presumably Mary and Rebecah. There is no record for Margaret. The column in which she would appear is heavily blotted on the census image, so we might speculate that there was an entry there except for the fact that the totals at the bottom indicate only one member of the household over 25. There are also three individuals in the "All Other Free Persons" category. I have no idea what that means in this case, perhaps employees.

On the 1820 Census, we have two males b. 1795-1804, presumably James and Matthew; one male b. 1805-1810, presumably John; one male under 10, presumably Samuel; one female over 45, presumably Margaret returning to the census record; two females b. 1795-1804, presumably Jean and Mary; one female b. 1805-1810, presumably Rebecah.

On the 1830 Census of Ligonier we find three males b. 1801-1810, two of whom might be Matthew and John; one male b. 1811-1820, presumably Samuel; one female b. 1771-1800, Margaret; three females b. 1801-1810, two of whom might be Mary and Rebecah; one female under 5, unknown. James was born 1798, so he doesn't appear to be at home anymore. Jean was born 1799, so she doesn't appear to be at home anymore. While the youngest girl could be Margaret's daughter, it seems increasingly unlikely at the parents' age. My opinion is that the unknown man and the unknown woman are the spouses of children still living at home and the youngest girl is one of their daughters.

John married #1970 Margaret Patton.

Marriage notes

They married 9 May 1797.

[Fendrick] gives the wedding location as Fort Loudon, which is in Franklin Co., Pennsylvania. [Schultz] gives it as Mount Pleasant Congregation, Westmoreland Co., married by Rev. James Powers.

Other names for Margaret: Margaret White.

Margaret was born 30 Mar 1772 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 18 Nov 1857 in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania.

She was the daughter of James & Mary (Newell) Patton. According to [Fendrick] he was a Captain in the Revolutionary War and the owner of the farm on which Fort Louden was erected. However, the Fort Loudon historical site says that the farm was owned by Matthew Patton.

An amusing bit of trivia from the Tribune article on John White, Jr.:

Thomas Buchanan, the father of James Buchanan lived with Captain Patton for several years after he arrived in this country from Ireland, and became a near neighbor after his marriage with Miss Ramsey. James, the future fifteenth President was eight years old when Mrs. Margaret White left that vicinity for her Westmoreland home, but she knew him very well and dusted his frock on many occasions.

On the 1850 Census Margaret is living with her son, John, and his family in Conemaugh, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania.
