#1971 John White ( John WhiteAndrew White )

John was born 18 Jan 1808 in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 30 Oct 1899 in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania.

He lived in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania from 1835 until his death according the 1897 Tribune article entitled "Judge John White".

Mr. White is now in the ninetieth year of his age, and has been an honored citizen of this town since 1835. The facts he relates in reference to the experience his father's family had with the Red Man came to him from his father John White, and his Uncle James White.

Unfortunately, looking at the census record things are problematic. The only John White I've found of even roughly the right age in Cambria Co. is a foreman in a mill, which doesn't square with the "judge" part of the title of that article too well. However, this John White does appear to arrive in Johnstown between the 1830 and 1840 Censuses and is present through the 1880 Census. The Ebensburg Freeman published a death notice on 3 Nov 1899: "John White, probably the oldest resident of Johnstown, died Monday night, aged 91 years." That Monday would have been 30 Oct 1899 which is within a year of being consistent with age 90 in 1897.

The only Judge White in this area noted in the histories is Judge Thomas White.

Since the article is a transcription and since it does not refer to him as a judge beyond the title (from what I can see), I'm assuming that this is a mistake and we've found our long-term resident of the Johnstown area.

On the 1840 Census he is in Johnstown with Margaret. None of their children would have been born yet but there are four males and three females in the household. There is a Samuel White separately enumerated in the Johnstown area, but he's in the 30-39 bracket instead of the 20-29 bracket, so it's possible that John's younger brother is the male in the appropriate age range. It's still before Samuel's marriage to Isabell, so I don't have any idea who the others are.

In 1850 they are in Conemaugh and the children are present. He is listed as a laborer.

In 1860 they are back in Johnstown. Mary is no longer present but the younger children are.

On the 1870 Census he is a foreman at a mill. A Marietta McLain, age 40, is living with them, presumably Margaret's sister.

On the 1880 Census he works in a lumber mill.

John married #50890 Margaret A. McLain.

Marriage notes

They married 17 Feb 1843 in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania.

They were married by the Rev. Samuel Swan of the Johnstown Congregation.

Other names for Margaret: Margaret A. White.

Margaret was born Abt 1818 in Pennsvylania.

She is the daughter of Mordecai McLain of Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. I don't find her after the 1880 Census so, presumably, she died before the 1900 Census.
