#47419 Thomas Simpson ( Hannah WhiteAndrew White )

Thomas was born 3 Apr 1787 in Wallace's Mill, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He died 10 Apr 1860 in Indiana Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in Armagh Old Presbyterian Cemetery, Armagh, Indiana Co., Pennsylvania.

His grave marker is extremely worn and it's uncertain if the death year is 1860 or 1866.

Thomas' census record is somewhat puzzling if we accept that the grave marker is his (i.e., the birth and death dates are correct) and that he married Elizabeth. We have Elizabeth as head of household in 1860 in Center, Indiana Co., Pennsylvania which we would expect if Thomas died earlier that year (the census was in June).

Moving back to the 1850 Census of Center we would expect to see Thomas as head of household but it is Elizabeth and Thomas is not listed anywhere that I can find in the area, including the surrounding counties. There is a Thomas in Allegeny Co. married to Ann but he is listed as born 1787 in Ireland. There is one in Fayette Co. married to Susan who born in Pennsylvania in 1789.

Stepping back another census to 1840 we find a Thomas Simson in the index for Center. However, someone has added a note amending the name to something like Renson and, looking at the census taker's handwriting on other sheets, I agree that the first letter is clearly an R and not an S. We do find a Thomas Simpson of the appropriate age in Hempfield, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was born in Westmoreland, although about 25 miles northeast in what is now around Blairsville. There is a woman in the household of the right age bracket to be Elizabeth. However, there are three younger women and no boys, which makes me uncertain about identifying this as our Thomas as their boys would still be young. Further, the Thomas on the census has a presence going back for decades, never with exactly the right family makeup.

In short, there seems to be no census evidence of Thomas' existence that I can find if we assume that he is the spouse of Elizabeth.

The only other Simpson grave in Armagh Cemetery is a Rachel Simpson, b. 1862.

Thomas married #66925 Elizabeth Clark.

Marriage notes

They married 1812 in Pennsvylania.

Elizabeth was born 1797 in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

We find her onthe 1850 Census of Center, Indiana Co., Pennsylvania along with her four sons.

We find her on the 1860 Census of Center, newly a widow. Martin and Thomas are still at home and they have a 16 year old housekeeper living with them. She probably passed away in the next decade as she doesn't seem to appear in the census records of 1870 or later.
